Encouraged by his musician friends, Lane signed up for the band department, completed his boot training, and was put in charge of the yet-to-be formed No. 17 Band. He sat around from June 1 until November and was able to “moonlight” and play at Waukegan’s White Door Club. By November, the band was scheduled to go to Pensacola, Florida, and Lane began to assemble a book of arrangements, including a Dudley Brooks’s chart on “One O’Clock Jump” with its formidable high-note trumpet parts. Lane had the virtuoso trumpeter Frank Motley in his crew—“a top man for high notes”—but needed more capable musicians. Once assembled, he rehearsed them section by section, copied and originated arrangements, and earned considerable praise from Chief Stone, his senior officer, up from Florida to inspect this new band.
